Fall 2018

Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community Members:

I am excited to welcome you back to what promises to be an exciting, educational, and productive 2018-19 school year. Classes begin on Tuesday, September 4th with orientation days in each building before the first day of school. If you have not received information on student orientation days please contact the office staff in your child’s building to receive orientation information and paperwork. We are very excited to offer all students K-12 FREE BREAKFAST and LUNCH this school year, if you would like more information on this program please contact our food service department at 760-1550.

This summer we continued investing in our staff and students.  During the 3rd year of our Summer Acceleration Program, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students focused on improving their reading and math skills, keeping their eyes on the Muskegon Promise Scholarship, which pays for 2 years of college for qualifying students!

Our staff had the opportunity to identify and personalize their own learning by selecting growth opportunities that best meet their professional learning needs.  By personalizing our summer learning and allowing staff to work toward their identified needs, we model how we hope learning will be personalized for children in our schools.

I want to thank the OVEA and OVMESPA for their help in creating a school calendar that meets the needs of our children, while satisfying the requirements of the Michigan Department of Education. This calendar will again include a series of “Early Release” days that take place between September and March that will be utilized for parent-teacher conferences and staff professional development.  In addition to the mailing you should be receiving soon, each family should also have received a large 2018-19 calendar in the mail earlier in August. If you did not receive the calendar please contact staff in your child’s office to request one. If you are unable to obtain this calendar from your your child’s office, please contact the Orchard View Central Office at 760-1300.

As always thank you for being a wonderful community that continues to take pride in the school district and the students who attend Orchard View. Please remember to circle November 6th on your calendar for our fall election. Once again, we will ask our community to consider a ballot proposal that if passed will allow us to replace boilers, roofing and reconfigure student drop off and pick up areas, all of which will keep our students safe, dry, and warm. I want to wish each of you a wonderful school year filled with great educational experiences, and I look forward to seeing all of our children prepared for future success through the educational opportunities to Discover, Learn, and Succeed provided by the exceptional staff at Orchard View Schools.

Alert to OV Parents

November 5, 2018

Dear Staff and Community Members,

This past weekend the Orchard View High School Marching Band attended a competition at Ford Field in Detroit. This morning the high school band director and principal learned that a small number of students ingested edible marijuana during this trip. The school resource officer, a Muskegon Township Police Officer, was informed immediately and interviewed those involved. The student teacher for the band class allegedly sold the marijuana to a student prior to the trip.

The student teacher who allegedly provided the marijuana has been removed from her position and will not be returning to Orchard View.  Muskegon Township Police will continue their investigation and Orchard View Schools will fully cooperate with their efforts.

Cardinal Elementary - Boiler Issue

There is a boiler at Cardinal Elementary not working properly and therefore the 5th grade area of the building is much cooler than normal. Temperatures in that area of the building were in the mid 50s early this morning and we anticipate will rise throughout the day.

The administration, along with teaching staff are considering moving 6-7 classrooms to other areas of the building until heat is either restored or at least at a more comfortable level for education.

The part needed to fix the boiler is set to be delivered Tuesday.

Cardinals Soccer Wins!

The OV Soccer Team won last evening and has now earned an opportunity to play in the MHSAA Soccer District Championship Game Saturday at 10am.

The game will be hosted by Orchard View High School and our opponent will be  Oakridge. I hope as many staff, students, and community members as possible will attend this event.

It will be a great way to show your "Cardinal Pride" and support these young men who have worked so hard all season long! GO CARDINALS!

Important Message from our Superintendent

Orchard View school officials have recently learned of the arraignment of Gary Allen, a community member, on two counts: one count of child sexually abusive activity, and another count of using a computer to commit a crime.  The initial Michigan State Police report indicates these charges do not involve any children residing in our district.

This community member has served as a videographer for several of our athletic contests, and we are unaware of any unsupervised contact with students. The district has severed ties with Mr. Allen.

Please know we always take any allegations of this nature seriously, and the safety of our students is always our top priority.  If you have concerns regarding student safety, you may contact the Orchard View Central Office at 231-760-1300.
