Snow Days Update from
Supt. J.Nielsen

March 1, 2019

Dear Staff, students, parents, and community members

As you can imagine, this crazy winter weather has been a huge topic of discussion around the school district the past few weeks.  To date, our district has accumulated a total of 12 snow days which now has us three days over the total allowable days that can be forgiven per state law.  We recently applied for the three day waiver and it was granted.

At this time we have to add instructional time to our current school calendar.  While it is likely we will add these make-up days to the end of our school calendar in June, know that there is still the chance that the legislature may take action and forgive more snow days than current law allows.  There is considerable conversation about this topic going on with state lawmakers.

While we wait to see what comes out of Lansing regarding snow day forgiveness, know that in the coming weeks we will be communicating our plan for adding instructional day(s) to the end of our school year.

It is never easy calling a snow day, but it is always the right thing to do when the safety of our students and staff are at stake.  We will continue to cancel school when the weather conditions dictate we do so to ensure safety of all. Thank you for all of your flexibility and understanding as we continue to make our way through the winter months.

Jim Nielsen, Superintendent

PowerSchool Data Breach

Dear Parents,

Late last week, we became aware of a data breach in PowerSchool, our student information system. At this time, the breach appears to be limited to the high school. We immediately launched an internal investigation and have found some unauthorized changes have been made to grades and attendance. The investigation is still ongoing. We have notified the parents of the students we know were involved. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me.

Jim Nielsen,
Superintendent

2019 Snow Days Update

Orchard View has been approved for 3 additional days of forgiveness due to the school cancellations so far this year. When a decision is made as to how we will handle days over and above the 6 that we are allowed each year and the 3 additional days we have just been granted, I will let you know. - Jim Nielsen, Superintendent
